Although PD has been applied outside of technology design, here we focus on PD in relation to the introduction of computer-based systems at work. We discuss three main issues addressed by PD researchers; the politics of design; the nature of participation; and method practices in schools should be supported and empowered through our university course work. As well, we believe that it is important for university researchers to increasingly engage research practices in K-12 schools that reflect participatory, democratic principles in their interactions, relationships and initiatives in these contexts.

To accomplish this goal, participatory design aims to establish a creative space for users and designers where principles such as power sharing, knowledge exchange, and self-representation can be realized and put into practice. Through participation in design, the users of a service are given equal voice in the design of that service.
